MINDMAP & ORIENTATION

Route quadrat.jpg

PRACTICAL

Route

Our journey from Vienna to Istanbul will encompass about 2,200 kilometres and lead across borders of 8 countries: Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. Some of them EU, some candidates, each of them finds itself in a completely unique political situation - a fragile Europe.

Our journey will often run along the Danube bank, through cities such as Bratislava, Budapest, Belgrade and Sofia, but also over mountainous stretches in Bulgaria and Greece. Within about 90 days, we will encounter at least seven languages, three alphabets, five currencies and many, many boarders.

MENTAL

In Between

Departure always means break-up and this break opens up a space. The timeframe created is in between A and B, is no longer A and not yet B. Everything is in motion there, everything IS motion.

Kind of an in-between as country.

Interspaces can mean diversity and creative potential. Changes always bring renewal - the old is left behind, separations are carried out. Who you are is renegotiated and transformation processes can take place.

According to the topic of migration, however, also disunity and fragmentation play a role, the feeling of acting in a field of tension, of being pulled back and forth between places, languages and affiliations.

Both the potential and the challenges that a world of ever-increasing mobility-processes implies for individuals will be the focus of our project. We understand borders - those in between countries and languages, but also in between genres - as inherently permeable, as places where encounters IN BETWEEN A and B take place.

Fuge quadrat 2.jpg

STRUCTURAL

Fugue

The two meanings of the German word "Fuge" can be used to describe substantial characteristics of our project:

On the one hand, the entire structure corresponds to the musical compositional principle of the fugue (from the Latin word "fuga" for escape), in which a theme is repeated by different, temporally staggered voices – escaping from one to the other.

On the other hand, the word also means a narrow space in between two parts or materials, a gap.

This is the case in all the mother tongues of our project's participants*.
